Bellewaerde

Bellewaerde is a prominent theme park situated in the West Flemish countryside, specifically in Zonnebeke near Ypres, Belgium. It holds the distinction of being the oldest operating theme park in the country. Established on July 3, 1954, on grounds that were once the site of the World War I Battle of Bellewaarde, the park draws its name from an old castle still standing near its main entrance.

History and Evolution

Initially founded by the Florizoone family as the Touristic Centre of Bellewaerde, it began as a zoo and safari park, similar to their operation of Meli Park. The park's name evolved over time, becoming "Bellewaerde Park" in 1971 and simplified to "Bellewaerde" in 2004. The 1980s marked a significant transformation, with the park expanding to become more of a general attraction and thrill park. This era saw the introduction of rides like the River Splash log flume and the Keverbaan beetle coaster, alongside the development of themed zones such as "Far West," "Canada," and "Mexico."

Ownership of Bellewaerde changed hands over the years. It was sold in the early 1990s to the Walibi group, which later became part of the Six Flags Chain. In 2004, Six Flags divested its European parks, leading to Bellewaerde's acquisition by the British investment company Palamon. Currently, Bellewaerde is part of the Grévin & Cie group, a subsidiary of Compagnie des Alpes.

In 2008, Bellewaerde officially integrated zoo elements, opening a savannah-themed area. The park is known for its commitment to theming, beautiful gardens, and landscaping, contributing to its appeal for teens and families.

Attractions and Operations

Bellewaerde encompasses 54 hectares (130 acres) and is a major draw in Flanders, attracting approximately 850,000 to 900,000 visitors annually. Its attraction roster includes major rides such as Europe's first Boomerang roller coaster, the world's first Topple Tower, a Vekoma Mad House, an indoor coaster, an Alpine Coaster, and several water rides. More recent additions include the Wakala family coaster (2020), the Hampi nebulaz (2023), and the Brazilian Buggies (2024) and Amazonia (2024) rides.

A significant expansion occurred in June 2019 with the opening of the 3000 m² Bellewaerde Aquapark, featuring numerous slides, pools, and a lazy river. The park observes a seasonal operating schedule, typically from April to October, with its Halloween Event traditionally held in October. Since 2005, Bellewaerde has also offered a winter opening for a few weeks during the Christmas and New Year period, featuring holiday decorations and special entertainment.
