Essehof Zoo

Essehof Zoo, officially known in German as Tierpark Essehof, is a privately owned zoological park situated in Essehof, within the municipality of Lehre in Lower Saxony, Germany. Founded by Werner Beller, the zoo officially opened on Good Friday in 1968. Since its inception, Essehof Zoo has experienced continuous growth and development, expanding its facilities and animal collection.

Zoo Facilities and Development

The zoo's infrastructure has seen several significant additions over the decades. In 1974, a new coffee house was constructed. Between 1976 and 1978, new animal stalls and enclosures were built, followed by the completion of a new monkey house in 1988. A pivotal change in ownership occurred in 1991 when Uwe Wilhelm GmbH purchased the zoo, continuing its operation as a private entity. Under this new ownership, renovations and expansions have been implemented to enhance the visitor experience and the variety of exhibits.

A particularly unique feature introduced in 2002 is the water nature trail, which is noted as being one of its kind in northern Germany. This trail includes an underwater viewing area situated three meters below the water's surface and a 30-meter long wooden bridge. In 2007, an Australian exhibit was opened, and the deer park underwent renovation.

Animal Collection and Visitor Interaction

Essehof Zoo houses a collection of approximately 260 animals, representing 50 different species. These animals range from rare domestic breeds to species originating from Africa, Australia, and South America. Notable animals in its collection include racka, kangaroos, zebras, watussi cattle, meerkats, nutria, and gibbons.

Beyond observing the animals, visitors can engage with them through a petting zoo, allowing for close interaction. The zoo also offers opportunities for visitors to purchase food to feed certain animals. Essehof Zoo is a member of various German and international zoo and animal associations, including the Deutsche Tierparkgesellschaft (German Zoo Society), the Deutscher-Wildgehege-Verband (German Game Preserve), and the WAZA (World Association of Zoos and Aquariums).

The zoo does not receive any public funding and is located about 13 kilometers northeast of Braunschweig. Uwe Wilhelm GmbH, the current owner, also operates the nearby "Noah's Ark" zoo in Braunschweig.
