Miskolc Zoo

Miskolc Zoo, officially known as Miskolc Városi Vadaspark (Wildlife Park of Miskolc), is a zoological institution located in the city of Miskolc, Hungary. Situated within the expansive Csanyik park on the outskirts of Miskolc and adjacent to the Bükk National Park, the zoo occupies an area of 212,000 square meters.

History and Development

The origins of Miskolc Zoo can be traced back to a royal game park established by King Louis I in 1355. The modern zoo, however, was officially opened on August 20, 1983, and was constructed within a remarkable 100-day period through voluntary efforts. Initially, it functioned as a wildlife park intended to display the native fauna of the surrounding Bükk mountains.

Animal Collection and Exhibits

Today, Miskolc Zoo is home to approximately 700 animals representing 130 different species. While it continues to feature local wildlife, its collection has expanded to include exotic species such as camels, monkeys, parrots, tigers, and leopards. A distinctive feature of the zoo is its statue park, which showcases lifelike sculptures of extinct animals, serving as a visual reminder of biodiversity loss and the importance of conservation. This park also includes statues of prominent naturalists, notably the world's first statue dedicated to Gerald Durrell, a renowned conservationist and author.

Modernization and Conservation Focus

In the 2020s, Miskolc Zoo underwent significant renovations, bolstered by funding from the European Union's European Regional Development Fund and Hungarian state contributions totaling HUF 413.7 million. These upgrades included the introduction of a new 200-meter Sahel complex and the opening of multiple new buildings, enhancing the visitor experience and animal welfare. The zoo's emphasis on wildlife preservation, highlighted by its statue park, underscores its commitment to conservation education and awareness.
