Odense Zoo

Odense Zoo is a zoological garden situated in Odense, Denmark. Established in 1930, the zoo has evolved from its initial small collection of animals to become a significant institution housing approximately 1000 species from various regions across the globe. Its extensive collection and facilities have earned it recognition as a major tourist attraction.

Key Features and History

Upon its opening, Odense Zoo featured a limited number of animals, including two apes, a peacock, a deer, a mule, magpies, and guinea pigs. Over the decades, the zoo has expanded considerably, now showcasing a diverse array of species such as chimpanzees, monkeys, ring-tailed lemurs, Siberian tigers, Grévy's zebras, blue wildebeests, oryxes, giraffes, red pandas, and West Indian manatees, among many others.

A notable addition to Odense Zoo is its "Oceanium," inaugurated in 2001. This DKK 60 million facility is dedicated to South American wildlife, presenting animals from both the Amazon rainforest and the Antarctic regions. The "Oceanium" contributed to a visitor record in its inaugural year, attracting 439,533 visitors.

Recognition and Visitor Numbers

Odense Zoo has achieved significant recognition for its quality and visitor appeal. In 2008, it was identified as the most popular tourist attraction on the island of Funen and ranked ninth overall in Denmark. Further acclaim came in 2013 when the zoo received the "Best in Europe" award within its category, specifically for zoos accommodating up to 500,000 visitors annually. Visitor numbers have consistently been in the hundreds of thousands, with records set in years featuring major developments like the "Oceanium."
