River Wonders

River Wonders, previously known as River Safari, is a distinctive river-themed zoo and aquarium located in Mandai, Singapore. Established as part of the integrated Mandai Wildlife Reserve, it stands as Asia's inaugural attraction of its kind, focusing on showcasing diverse freshwater ecosystems and their inhabitants.

History and Development

The conceptualization for River Wonders began in early 2007, with its construction officially announced in February 2009. Initially budgeted at S$140 million, the project's cost rose to S$160 million due to escalating construction expenses. The park occupies 12 hectares (30 acres) within the larger 89-hectare Mandai Wildlife Reserve, making it the smallest of the four parks in the complex. The Giant Panda Forest exhibit opened to the public on November 29, 2012, and the park officially launched on February 28, 2014. In a rebranding effort, River Safari was renamed River Wonders on October 13, 2021.

Exhibits and Attractions

River Wonders is meticulously designed around the world's major river systems, offering visitors an immersive experience. Key exhibits include the Giant Panda Forest, which houses Giant Pandas Kai Kai and Jia Jia, along with their cub Le Le who was born in 2021 and later returned to China. The park also features the Amazon River Quest, a popular boat ride that navigates through South American wildlife, and the Amazon Flooded Forest, a large indoor complex showcasing species from the Amazon River, including West Indian manatees and giant otters.

Other notable exhibits are themed after rivers such as the Nile, Ganges, Mary, Mekong, and Yangtze, presenting a wide array of aquatic life and riparian species. The park's design emphasizes a tropical rainforest setting, complemented by thematic rides and educational displays, aiming to provide both entertainment and insight into riverine biodiversity.
