Sparsholt College Hampshire

Sparsholt College Hampshire, historically also referred to as Hampshire College of Agriculture, is an educational institution in England offering both Further Education (FE) and Higher Education (HE) courses. Located at Sparsholt near Winchester, with an additional campus in Andover, both within Hampshire, the college is dedicated to providing specialized training in countryside-based subjects.

Origins and Development

The college's roots trace back to 1899 when it was established as Hampshire's first Farm School at Lower Mill Farm, Old Basing. This initiative replaced earlier peripatetic agricultural training methods. The institution relocated to its present site at Westley Farm, Sparsholt, in 1914, following the County Council's purchase of a portion of the larger farm. Higher Education programs were introduced in 1983, commencing with Fishery Studies at HND level. Significant administrative changes occurred in 1993 when the college gained independence from Hampshire County Council under the Further and Higher Education Act 1992. In 2007, a merger with Cricklade College, Andover, led to the establishment of Andover College as the secondary campus.

These include Agriculture, Engineering, Fishery Studies, Equine Studies, Forestry and Woodland Management, Game and Wildlife Management, Horticulture, Sport and Outdoor Education, and Animal Management. The college caters to a substantial student population, with over 1900 full-time and 3000 part-time students, including approximately 450 pursuing HE qualifications.

The college is recognized for its association with the BBC Radio 4 program "Gardeners' Question Time," which maintains a base known as the Potting Shed at the institution. Sparsholt College Hampshire also features a demonstration garden and hosts annual open days, further integrating its educational mission with public engagement.

Among its former students are notable figures such as Charlie Dimmock, a television presenter and gardener, and Tom Hart Dyke, a horticulturist and plant hunter renowned for designing the World Garden of Plants.
