Blackpool Zoo Park

Blackpool Zoo Park, located in the seaside resort of Blackpool, Lancashire, England, is a 32-acre zoological park that first opened its doors in 1972. Situated on land formerly occupied by the Stanley Park Aerodrome, the zoo has grown to become a significant attraction, caring for over 1,000 animals from diverse global habitats. Owned by Parques Reunidos, it offers a variety of themed exhibits designed to educate and engage visitors about wildlife and conservation.

History and Development

The zoo's history is marked by continuous development and the introduction of new attractions. In 2005, the 'Dinosaur Safari' was unveiled, featuring life-size dinosaur models. The 'Amazonia' walk-through enclosure for South American animals followed in 2006. Significant investments were made in subsequent years, including the reintroduction of giraffes in 2008 with a new house and enclosures, and the addition of Magellanic penguins in 2009. A new sealion pool opened in 2010, alongside a new Children's Farm and refurbished restaurant in 2011.

Notable Exhibits and Animal Collections

Blackpool Zoo hosts a range of distinct habitats. Orangutan Outlook, reopened in 2014 after a £1 million renovation, is home to Bornean orangutans. Project Elephant, the zoo's largest development, features an expansive indoor elephant house, paddocks, and a pool, and began housing Asian elephants in 2017. The Old Elephant and Reptile House continues to be a sanctuary for a variety of reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, and fish. Gorilla Mountain, opened in 2000, is home to western lowland gorillas. Other notable exhibits include Lemur Wood, the zoo's first walk-through enclosure, and Active Oceans, which houses California sea lions and Magellanic penguins, with the zoo being the sole UK institution to keep this species. Giraffe Heights allows visitors close encounters with giraffes, and the Big Cat Habitat is home to African lions and Amur tigers. The zoo also features Wolf Ridge, Wallaby Walkabout, Small Primate House, Waders and Waddlers aviary, Flamingo Lake, a Semi-Nocturnal House, and a Children's Farm.

Visitor Facilities and Features

Beyond its animal collections, Blackpool Zoo provides various facilities for visitors. These include wheelchair and pushchair hire, with the zoo being built on accessible flat land. Catering is available at the Lakeview Cafe and several kiosks. Retail therapy is available at two main shops. For events and functions, the zoo offers a lecture theatre and meeting room. A unique feature is the 15-inch gauge miniature railway, which offers a scenic journey past various animal enclosures. The zoo also features the 'Playbarn', an indoor soft play area, and offers discounts to Lancashire residents.
