Khao Kheow Open Zoo, located in Si Racha, Chonburi, Thailand, is a significant zoological institution known for its expansive grounds and diverse animal population. History and Development

The zoo's origins trace back to 1974, initially established on approximately 200 acres in the foothills of Khao Kheow Mountain. This expansion was prompted by the increasing number of animals at the Dusit Zoo. Khao Kheow Open Zoo officially opened to the public in 1978. Further significant growth occurred in 1984 when its area was expanded to about 1,000 acres. In subsequent years, the Thai government allocated an additional 800 acres to enhance the zoo's capacity for environmental and wildlife education and research. By 2025, it continues to hold its status as the second-largest zoo in Asia.

Visitor Experience and Notable Features

A defining characteristic of Khao Kheow Open Zoo is its "open zoo" concept, designed to provide visitors with close-up encounters with animals. Guests can explore the zoo by renting golf carts, driving their own vehicles, or walking through the various exhibits. The zoo is divided into several thematic zones, including the African Savannah, designed to replicate African wildlife habitats, and the Cats Complex Park, which houses a diverse collection of feline species. The Walk Through Aviary allows visitors to be immersed among numerous bird species, while the Khao Kheow Night Safari offers a unique after-dark experience. The Eld's Deer Park is another dedicated area for specific species.

Khao Kheow Open Zoo boasts an impressive collection, housing over 8,000 animals from more than 300 species. Among its notable residents is Moo Deng, a baby pygmy hippopotamus born in 2024, who quickly garnered international attention and boosted visitor numbers.
