Pata Zoo

Pata Zoo is a private zoological facility situated on the 6th and 7th floors of the Pata Pinklao Department Store in Bangkok, Thailand. Established in 1983, it operates within a unique urban setting, bringing a variety of animals to the upper levels of a commercial building.

Layout and Inhabitants

The zoo is divided into two main areas. The sixth floor is dedicated to nocturnal animals, fish, and reptiles, notably featuring successful breeding programs for albino Burmese pythons. This level also displays a stuffed giant freshwater stingray, highlighting the world's largest species of freshwater stingray, which is endangered. On weekends, the sixth floor hosts magic shows and educational sessions on exotic pets.

The seventh floor houses birds, primates such as orangutans, macaques, and gibbons, as well as binturongs, Asiatic black bears, and lemurs. This level also includes an artificial waterfall and a botanical garden. A prominent resident is Bua Noi, a female western lowland gorilla over 30 years old, who is the only gorilla in Thailand. Bua Noi was born in the wild, captured as a baby, and has lived at the zoo since September 1987.

Animal Welfare Concerns and Activism

Pata Zoo has been the subject of sustained attention from Thai animal welfare organizations and international activists. Concerns have frequently been raised regarding the living conditions of the animals, particularly the primate enclosures and Bua Noi's captivity. Petitions have been submitted to Thai authorities calling for the zoo's closure and the relocation of animals.

Authorities have investigated these concerns, with responses varying over time. While some regulations were cited as not explicitly forbidding animals in high-rise buildings, there were instances where Thai authorities ordered the removal of large animals. The zoo has consistently maintained its innocence of wrongdoing and asserted that its animals are well-cared for. In recent years, efforts by public figures and organizations have continued to advocate for Bua Noi's relocation.

Zoo's Response and Public Access

In response to ongoing criticism and activism, Pata Zoo has implemented measures to address welfare concerns and manage public perception. This includes introducing policies for more controlled visitor access to see Bua Noi, aiming to reduce stress for the aging gorilla. The zoo states it provides dedicated care and affection to its animals, emphasizing Bua Noi's long-term presence under the care of the same keeper. The zoo's operating hours have also been adjusted, with it now open only on weekends and public holidays.
