Ocean Park Hong Kong, often referred to simply as Ocean Park, stands as a prominent animal theme park and conservation center situated in Hong Kong. Opened on January 10, 1977, it holds the distinction of being Hong Kong's second oldest theme park and is recognized for its expansive grounds covering 91.5 hectares (226 acres).

History and Development

The park's origins trace back to a 1959 proposal for a large-scale oceanarium. The Hong Kong Jockey Club provided significant funding, and after several years of construction, Ocean Park officially opened its doors. Initially conceived as a marine life center, it evolved to encompass a wide range of attractions. Despite periods of popularity, the park faced financial difficulties, particularly following the 1997 Asian financial crisis and the 2003 SARS outbreak. A substantial redevelopment plan, initiated in 2005, significantly expanded the park's offerings and aimed to re-establish it as a world-class marine-themed destination with a strong focus on animals and nature.

Attractions and Features

Ocean Park is geographically divided into two primary areas: the Waterfront and the Summit, interconnected by a cable car system and a funicular. The Summit area is notable for featuring an outdoor escalator that was once the world's longest. The park boasts a variety of attractions, including thrill rides and themed zones. Animal exhibits are a central feature, with dedicated spaces for giant pandas, rainforest ecosystems, and polar environments. It also houses a significant aquarium, including the Grand Aquarium with the world's largest aquarium dome and the Shark Mystique exhibit.

Conservation and Education

Beyond its entertainment value, Ocean Park Hong Kong is committed to merging education with conservation advocacy. While it has faced criticism regarding the capture and exhibition of large sea animals, the park actively engages in conservation initiatives and breeding programs. It aims to educate visitors about wildlife and the importance of protecting natural habitats. The park is also well-known for its annual Halloween Bash, a major event in Asia.
