Reptilia

Reptilia is a prominent Canadian zoological organization specializing in reptiles, amphibians, and arachnids. It operates as a collection of large indoor reptile zoos, with its primary facilities located in Ontario. The organization is distinguished by its extensive indoor exhibit spaces, which collectively span over 84,000 square feet across its various locations.

Locations and Expansion

The original Reptilia zoo was established in Vaughan, Ontario, in a facility measuring 25,000 square feet. The collection expanded in 2018 with the opening of a second location in Whitby, housed in a former 31,000-square-foot retail store. Later that year, plans were announced for further expansion, including the development of zoos in London and Barrie. After an initial rejection by London City Council, a proposal for a 28,000-square-foot reptile zoo in Westmount Mall was eventually approved in 2022, allowing for continued growth.

Animal Collection and Rescue Efforts

Reptilia's collection features a diverse array of species, numbering over 250 individual reptiles, amphibians, and arachnids. Among its most notable inhabitants is Induna, a 14-foot, 1,200-pound male Nile crocodile, which is recognized as Canada's largest crocodile. The zoo also houses impressive specimens such as 20-foot-long pythons, anacondas, poison dart frogs, and rattlesnakes. A significant aspect of Reptilia's operations is its commitment to animal welfare, with approximately 75% of its animals being rescues. Many of these animals are acquired from individuals who can no longer care for them due to their adult size, with Reptilia receiving frequent calls for such placements and taking in around 75 animals annually. Many rescued animals are later transferred to other accredited facilities.

Educational and Outreach Programs

Reptilia places a strong emphasis on education, offering curriculum-compliant educational programs for students from kindergarten through grade 12. These programs are delivered both at Reptilia's locations and through outreach initiatives where reptiles are transported to schools for in-classroom lessons. The zoo also provides specialized post-secondary programs tailored for first responders, educators, animal control officers, and veterinarians. Beyond formal education, Reptilia fosters connections with other educational institutions, supplying reptiles and materials to the Ontario Science Centre and collaborating with the Toronto Zoo on their educational endeavors. The organization also engages with numerous schools within the Greater Toronto Area.

Film Industry Involvement

In addition to its zoological and educational functions, Reptilia serves the film and television industry by providing reptiles and experienced handlers for productions. The organization has contributed its expertise and animal talent to various media projects, including well-known shows like Guinness, Murdoch Mysteries, Canada's Greatest Know-It-All, YTV, and Daily Planet.
