Shaheed A.H.M Qamaruzzaman Central Park and Zoo

Shaheed A.H.M Qamaruzzaman Central Park and Zoo is a significant public park and zoological facility located in Rajshahi, Bangladesh. Spanning 33 acres along the banks of the Padma River, it functions as a vital recreational and educational space for residents and visitors. The park is named in honor of A.H.M Qamaruzzaman, a distinguished national leader and one of four individuals martyred in 1975.

History and Development

The land now occupied by the park was historically a horse racecourse during the British colonial era. Following the departure of the British, the area remained undeveloped for many years. In the early 1970s, local political figure Abul Hasnat Muhammad Qamaruzzaman initiated the transformation of this abandoned space into a public park under the Rajshahi Zilla Parishad. The park was officially inaugurated in 1972. Ownership was transferred to the Rajshahi City Corporation in 1996. The addition of a zoo within the park premises in 1983 further solidified its status as a popular destination for leisure and learning.

The park offers a variety of attractions designed to appeal to all age groups. A central lake provides an opportunity for paddle boat rides, offering a tranquil experience amidst greenery. The landscape is enhanced by artistic sculptures, a dedicated butterfly garden, and a picturesque bridge. The zoo within the park houses a diverse collection of animals, such as Bengal tigers, spotted deer, crocodiles, monkeys, and pythons. Several species of birds, including peacocks, parakeets, and waterfowl, are also present. The small lake serves as a habitat for fish and aquatic birds. Shaheed A.H.M Qamaruzzaman Central Park and Zoo is open to the public daily from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. The admission fee is 25 Bangladeshi Taka per person. Additional fees may apply for the use of picnic spots or for group events. The park is conveniently located about 3 kilometers from Rajshahi city center and is readily accessible via rickshaw or auto-rickshaw. Parking is available near the main entrance. The park experiences its highest visitor numbers during weekends, school holidays, and festivals, attracting numerous students on educational excursions and families seeking leisure activities. Visiting during the morning or late afternoon is recommended for a more comfortable experience.
