Tropical World (Leeds)

Tropical World, located in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, is a significant zoological attraction and butterfly house. It holds the distinction of possessing the largest collection of tropical plants outside of Kew Gardens, making it a vital center for botanical display. Licensed as a zoo and holding membership with BIAZA, Tropical World offers visitors an immersive experience into various global tropical ecosystems.

History

The origins of Tropical World trace back to 1911 with the construction of the Coronation House conservatory in Roundhay Park. This structure underwent rebuilding in 1939 and modernization in 1984. Ambitious expansion plans led to the establishment of a tropical butterfly house in 1988, which was named Tropical World. Initially, it showcased rare tropical plants alongside birds, fish, reptiles, and small mammals. In 2008, the attraction was renamed The Arnold and Marjorie Ziff Tropical World to honor its financial sponsors. A substantial £1.5 million refurbishment was completed in 2015, which notably upgraded the aquarium with new species and an Aztec theme, and also included the addition of a new cafe.

Overview of Attractions

The core of Tropical World consists of several climate-controlled glass houses, each meticulously designed to replicate a specific tropical environment. These houses are home to a rich variety of tropical flora and fauna, with some animals, such as butterflies and turtles, allowed to roam freely within designated areas.

The visitor journey begins in the butterfly zone, designed to evoke a swamp-like atmosphere, where free-flying butterflies are abundant. Ponds within this area host terrapins and koi, while Morelet's crocodiles are housed in a dedicated enclosure. This section seamlessly transitions into an Aztec-themed aquarium, showcasing a diverse array of both freshwater and marine species. Among the aquatic inhabitants are poison dart frogs, axolotls, clownfish, octopuses, stingrays, seahorses, red-bellied piranhas, and various catfish.

Following the aquarium, visitors enter a rainforest floor section, complete with a cascading waterfall. This area features tropical fish, industrious leafcutter ants, terrestrial birds, and butterfly pupae. An upper level provides reptile displays, including a variety of snakes, lizards, and iguanas.

The rainforest canopy house offers an experience with free-flying birds, including parrots, and is home to cotton-top tamarins. This leads to a desert house, which exhibits a mob of meerkats, tortoises, and birds adapted to arid conditions. The final enclosure is a nocturnal house, offering a glimpse into the lives of creatures active after dark, such as bats, armadillos, Malagasy giant rats, Egyptian fruit bats, pygmy slow lorises, mouse lemurs, and potoroos.

Complementing the exhibits, Tropical World provides a cafe with views of the Canal Gardens and a gift shop located at the entrance.
