A 2024 review by Mohabey et al. controversially placed it within the ceratosaurian clade Noasauridae, though this analysis did not include any spinosaurids. In contrast, a 2024 description of the Iberian spinosaurid Riojavenatrix by Isasmendi et al. once again placed Camarillasaurus within Spinosauridae. Most recently, in 2025, Rauhut and colleagues found high support for its placement within Spinosaurinae, as the sister taxon to a clade comprising Spinosaurus and a Kem Kem spinosaurid specimen.
