Antisana

Antisana is a prominent stratovolcano situated in the northern Andes of Ecuador, holding the distinction of being the fourth highest volcano in the country. It is located approximately 50 kilometers southeast of the bustling capital city, Quito. With an elevation reaching 5,753 meters (18,875 ft), Antisana is recognized as one of the most technically demanding climbs within the Ecuadorian Andes, attracting experienced mountaineers.

Historical Exploration and Ascents

Antisana holds a place in the history of Andean exploration. In 1802, the renowned Prussian-born explorer Alexander von Humboldt included Antisana among the five volcanic mountains he attempted to ascend during his significant journey through the Americas. These explorations highlight the volcano's early recognition as a notable geographical feature. The first recorded ascent of South Antisana was achieved much later, in 1965. This pioneering climb was led by American climber Edwin Bernbaum, who was joined by two Ecuadorian climbers, Rómulo Pazmino and Leonardo Droira.
