Brevard Zoo

Brevard Zoo is a 75-acre nonprofit zoological organization located in Melbourne, Florida, accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. It was founded by the East Coast Zoological Society of Florida, Inc., which formed in 1986 with the goal of creating a conservation hub for Brevard County. Construction began in 1992, and the zoo celebrated its grand opening on March 26, 1994, with a significant community volunteer effort contributing to its development.

Key Features and Attractions

The zoo is home to over 900 animals representing more than 170 species from five continents. It is organized into five main themed areas: Expedition Africa, Lands of Change: Australia and Beyond, Wild Florida, Rainforest Revealed, and Paws On. A smaller exhibit, Treasures of the Caribbean, also offers a unique experience. Brevard Zoo is particularly renowned for its distinctive visitor experiences, which include a variety of animal feeding opportunities, kayak tours through protected wetlands, behind-the-scenes encounters, and the Treetop Trek aerial ropes course. Some of these attractions are unique to the zoo in the United States.

Conservation and Operations

Brevard Zoo is actively involved in wildlife conservation, notably through programs focused on the release and rehabilitation of rescued American black bears. Some bears, deemed non-releasable, serve as ambassador animals. The zoo also participates in captive breeding programs, such as for endangered spider monkeys, and has a history of accepting orphaned animals confiscated from illegal trade. Historically, the zoo also participated in breeding programs for species like southern white rhinos. The zoo operates with an annual budget of approximately $5 million, largely earned through its operations.

Notable Exhibits and Animal Programs

Expedition Africa showcases animals like giraffes, white rhinos, and okapis, and features the Cape to Cairo Express miniature train ride. Lands of Change: Australia and Beyond includes a large free-flight aviary and a walkthrough Kangaroo Walkabout. Wild Florida highlights native Florida wildlife, including American alligators and crocodiles, and is home to ambassador black bears. Rainforest Revealed focuses on fauna from Central and South America, with notable residents including jaguars and giant otters, and has a history of spider monkey breeding. The Paws On area is designed for children and families, featuring an outdoor aquarium with local marine life from the Indian River Lagoon, as well as a petting zoo and playground facilities.
